(News21USA) — Can you name the richest man in your state? Unless you have a billion dollars in your bank account, we can guarantee it’s not you.
Nearly every state will have a billionaire resident by 2023, according to Forbes, which released its list of America’s richest people for the first time since 2019.
As of June 2023, only three states have no billionaires: Alaska, Delaware and West Virginia. The latter has not always been the case, the outlet explained, referring to Governor Jim Justice, who lost his position two years ago due to deep debt.
The lack of billionaires is not a problem for other states, notably California, Florida, New York and Texas. According to Forbes, California has 179 billionaires, New York has 130, Florida has 92 and Texas has 73.
Considering that the richest man in America and the world, Elon Musk, now calls the Lone Star State home, Texas has an extra jewel in its crown.
Including Musk, the five richest people in the report are Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Larry Ellison of Oracle, Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway and Larry Page of Google.
The youngest person on the list is 36-year-old Lukas Walton of Illinois, whose fortune comes from the family that owns Walmart. Elsewhere, the oldest billionaire is 93-year-old Annette Lerner of Maryland, the widow of Washington Nationals owner Ted Lerner. Forbes points to her source of wealth as real estate.
Lerner is one of nine women on the Forbes list. The wealthiest of them all is Jacqueline Marrs of Virginia, granddaughter of Mars Candy Company founder Frank C. Marrs.
According to Forbes, Mars and more than half of those on the list made their money in one of four industries: food and beverage, technology, finance and investing, or fashion and retail.
Other notables on the list include New Orleans Saints owner Gail Benson, Nike’s Phil Knight and his family (Oregon), and Chick-fil-A chairman Dan Casey and his child Bubba Casey and Trudy Casey White (Georgia).
Some famous names failed to make the list. That includes Bill Gates, whose $116 billion net worth isn’t enough to beat Washington state resident Bezos. Also missing from the list is Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg. As of Thursday, Forbes listed Page’s net worth at $98 billion, and Page is the richest man in California with a net worth of $105 billion.
There has been a shuffle at the top of some states. At the end of last year, Forbes announced the list of the 400 richest people in the United States. At the time, Florida’s richest man was Thomas Peterffy, who made $20.3 billion from Interactive Brokers. Ken Griffin, who has since replaced Peterffy, is worth an estimated $32.7 billion thanks to hedge funds.
