Las Vegas police have identified the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which left three people dead and another injured.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill identified the suspect Thursday during a news conference as 67-year-old Anthony James Polito. McMahill said Polito was a resident of nearby Henderson, Nevada, and applied “numerous” times for jobs at various higher education institutions in Nevada, and was denied each time.

Polito was killed by police during a shootout on Wednesday.

The sheriff said Polito had a “list” of people he was “looking for” on campuses, including teachers from Eastern Carolina, where he previously worked.

Polito also sent 22 letters to various university employees across the country without a return address, one of which had a white powdery substance inside, McMahill said.

When Polito’s home was searched after the shooting, detectives found a chair with a downward-pointing arrow pointing to a will-like document.

Police are still trying to determine a motive, McMahill said.

Authorities said Polito used a 9mm Taurus handgun purchased legally in 2022, adding that 11 magazines were with the individual when he arrived on campus.

McMahill said at a news conference Wednesday that the first calls to 911 were made at 11:45 a.m. He said two police officers were treated for minor injuries while searching rooms and buildings on campus.
